Hello,

My Geo Tour Group tour concentrated on the geology of Northern and Central Namibia.

I extend my trip.  I hire a guide for a week.  We make stops as we travel south.

Garas Park Camp. (The humorous creation of the Owner.)

The Devil’s Playground. (The irrepressible creation of Time.)

Yet I am determined to see Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in Africa. The second largest canyon in the world.

A brief history of the Canyon:

About 650 million years ago (Mya), plate movement formed a north-south graben, or lowered area, along which the ancient Fish River could flow and eventually erode a flat plain, which is today's upper canyon. Glaciation at around 300 Mya, part of the Dyka glaciation during the Karoo Ice Age, further deepened the canyon.

650 Mya!

300 Mya!

The canyon deepens until Today.   The canyon will deepen Tomorrow.

I have learned an important lesson from my international travels:  “Have Patience and Maintain a Sense of Humor.”

One more Lesson from the Canyon?  “Beauty takes Time.”

Cheers,

Jan

PS In case you're wondering, I took that shot above.
